Being prepared for beauty school can help you feel less stressed out so you can focus on learning exciting new skills. Check Application Requirements

If you want to apply to cosmetology school, take the time to check the application requirements of the school you’re interested in attending. Sometimes you might only need proof of high school completion and a photo ID, but many times you’ll need to provide other information as well. Knowing what you’ll need beforehand can make the admissions process go smoothly.

Decide Which Path You’re Interested In

There are many different paths you can take in the beauty industry. You can pursue a future in cosmetology, esthetics, barbering, manicuring, and much more. Make sure you know which path is right for you, then choose a beauty school and apply for a program accordingly. Doing it the other way around can cause unnecessary stress later on!

Choose Whether You’ll Attend Part-Time or Full-Time

Deciding whether you want to take classes part-time or full-time is a big decision. Part-time classes cost less per month, but it will take longer for you to complete the program. Full-time classes require more money and time per month, but you can finish school faster this way.

Check Tuition Costs

Knowing how you’ll pay for cosmetology school is an important factor to consider. Are you going to save up for tuition beforehand or pay for it as you go along? Are you planning on applying for financial aid* and scholarships to see if you qualify?

Get School Supplies

Beauty schools provide students with student kits, but these contain supplies like brushes, shears, and mannequin heads. It’s up to you to have all the other necessary school supplies before your first day of class. Here are some basic supplies we’d recommend keeping in your school bag:

• Pencils and pens
• Erasers
• Lined paper or notebooks
• Binders, trapper keepers, and/or folders
• Hair ties and bobby pins
• Phone charger
• Large water bottle that doesn’t leak
• Snacks

Make Sure You Have the Right Clothes

You don’t need to dress to the nines while attending beauty school, but at the same time, it’s best to look put together and polished. After all, you’ll be creating and representing your personal brand in the beauty industry. The ideal clothing for cosmetology school is stylish, comfortable, and professional. Here are a few wardrobe staples that we’d recommend having in your closet:

• Black, closed-toe, non-slip shoes
• Jeans without any rips, tears, or holes
• Black clothing (It doesn’t show stains as easily!)

Get Your Sleep Schedule on Track

Make sure you put your best foot forward by being well-rested for the first day of class. This might require adjusting your sleep schedule before school starts. To do this gradually, change the time you go to sleep a little every night until classes begin.
The night before your first day of class, try your best to go to sleep earlier than usual. It doesn’t have to be a drastic change; even going to bed 30 minutes earlier can help you feel more refreshed the next morning!
