Skills You Should Master Before The Interview

There are a few things you should know if you want to become an esthetician and what you can do now to prepare for your interview day! When it comes to the beauty industry, employers have been in the business long enough to know exactly what they are looking for. No matter where your dream job may be, there are a few qualities and skills future employers look for when considering the perfect esthetician for the job!

Dress For Success

Get in the habit of advertising your business by advertising yourself! The best way to do so is not only by dressing professionally, but by keeping up with your hygiene. Clients look to their estheticians for skincare advice and beautiful results! Taking care of your hair, skin, nails, and overall appearance are ways to leave a positive first impression on potential interviewers who feel confident in knowing you can represent the company well.

Practice, Practice, Practice!

The more you become familiar with products, tools, and techniques, the more confident you can become as a future licensed esthetician! Practice makes perfect as you apply everything you learned from beauty school* and continue to gain more experience. The more skills you learn and experiences you gain in waxing, facials, eyebrows and all the requirements of a successful esthetician, the more impressed interviewers are bound to be! So now is the time to take advantage of your esthetician program. Ask esthetician instructors, or your beauty school’s admissions lots of questions and don’t be afraid to try new things! The more you know, the more services you have to offer! Having a wide range of skills and knowledge develops trust with potential clients!

Keep Up With The Trends

It’s no surprise that TikTok is all the rage among young people these days! Social media and Pinterest are a great way to keep up with the trends and popular beauty products that everyone is currently talking about! Doing your research and experimenting with trends can make you a stronger asset in the beauty industry. Impress your interviewer by staying on top of the latest trends!

Stay Organized

From staying on top of a consistent routine to mastering time management, you are more likely to stand out from the crowd! Someone who is organized can go a long way in any esthetician business. If you feel like balancing between esthetician school and life can be overwhelming at times, then now might be the time to create a daily schedule and routine for yourself. That way you can develop habits that support success and keep you in control of your life!

Show Others That You Care

Have you ever visited a salon to get your hair or nails done and overheard the customer next to you chat to her stylist as if they have known each other for years? Think Legally Blonde with Reese Witherspoon! Her character Elle develops a beautiful friendship with her nail technician, Paulette. Outside of Hollywood movies, it isn’t uncommon for those who work in the beauty industry to develop a relationship with their clients. Many clients prefer the same cosmetologist or esthetician who genuinely cares and listens to them while they visit a spa or salon to relax and pamper themselves. It’s not uncommon in the beauty industry for people to confide in their estheticians, nail technicians, or cosmetologists. When you show concern and empathy for others, this develops trust and builds relationships.

Get An Education In Esthetics

Once you graduate high school or get your GED, you can look into the right esthetician program for you. Not sure what to expect? That’s okay! We have the resources you need to prepare for beauty school. Depending on the state you live in or the program you join, there are different hours of training and exam requirements.

If you are considering an education in the “Golden State,” it is important to know that the state of California requires a minimum of 600-hours of education credits in skin condition analysis, skin treatments, makeup application, hair removal, and chemical treatments. Esthetician programs offer student clinics where they can practice and learn new skills under the supervision of licensed professionals.

Time For The Interview!

The best way to prepare for your interview is by looking up esthetician interview questions from employment websites, doing your research, or asking a licensed esthetician for advice.  Knowing what to expect from an interview can help you to feel more confident and ready. Here are a few other ways to nail your esthetician interview:

  • Be passionate – When you express how passionate you are about the beauty industry, future employers may feel more confident in hiring you to join their team of other estheticians who are also passionate about what they do.
  • Share what you know – During interviews, this is the perfect time to brag about your accomplishments and experiences. The more you share what you know and how you are aware of the many trends out there, the more impressive you look to a potential salon or spa! It is always important to let the interviewer know what makes you different from other interviewees or why they should hire you instead.
  • Smile – Get excited about your interview questions! We know interviews can be intimidating and this is easier said than done, but when you smile, you relax and can come off as more friendly and approachable to future clients.
  • Breathe – It’s important to feel calm and relaxed during the interview, so you can answer questions confidently. Always remember to breathe before and during your interview time!

There are many other ways to do well in an interview, but the most important thing you can do now is to gain as much experience as possible!
