Gain a thorough understanding of the business and marketing side of the salon industry, such as scheduling and maintaining a client-base, anticipating product needs and correctly predicting income.


State Board

Students receive detailed theoretical education to help prepare them to sit for the state board written exam. In 2022 the practical exam will no longer be required by the State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. Though, JD Academy will provide all students with a Practical Final Exam.


How Long Does the Cosmetology Program Take?

Our cosmetology program is 1,600 clock hours, which meets the requirements of the California Board of Barbering & Cosmetology.

Senate Bill SB 803 was signed into law on October 7, 2021, by Governor Newsom, and it will become law on January 1, 2022.

JD Academy is currently offering a cosmetology program with 1600 hours – 600 more than the minimum that will be required by the State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology in 2022.
In 2022 JD Academy will reduce the cosmetology program to 1500 hours – 500 more than the minimum that will be required by the State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. The additional 500 hours will allow students the opportunity to continue receiving the cut, color, and style education and practical hands-on experience that exceeds the minimum state requirements. (This is subject to approval by the Bureau of Post Secondary Education, National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences, and the Department of Education.)

Yes. We are accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts & Sciences (NACCAS).

How Much Does The Cosmetology Program Cost*?

To help you fund your education, we offer financial aid and scholarships to those who qualify. This includes Pell and other state/federal grants, private and public scholarships, and GI Bill®/VA benefits*. To talk through your options, give us a call! We’re here to help.

What Do I Need to Enroll in the Cosmetology Program?

Per the state of California, you must be at least 17 years of age and provide proof of age via a driver’s license, birth certificate, or passport.

You must also:

  • Provide proof of high school or equivalent completion. (Diploma, transcript, GED)
  • Provide a social security card.
  • Complete and sign an Enrollment Agreement. Students under age 18 must have a parent or legal guardian sign this.
  • Pay a non-refundable $150 application/enrollment fee. This fee is $10 for US Veterans.
