4 Tips for Preparing for Beauty School

Determining what you want to do in your career is a major decision – and many people find it quite challenging. We are often faced with making this choice right after high school but people decide to change career paths at any age!

One great option to consider is becoming a cosmetologist. A career in the beauty industry comes with plenty of perks. It allows you to meet new people every day, work flexible schedules, and offers a high level of job security. In fact, job growth in the beauty industry is projected to grow by 5% to 7% in the next few years.

The first step towards this type of career is to enroll in a state-certified beauty school to begin your training. Although finding a beauty school, enrolling, and getting approved is very exciting, it can also be stressful if you don’t know what you are doing.

So, how do you prepare for beauty school? Here are a few tips from our beauty school team at JD Academy of Salon + Spa in Danville, California.

Schedule a Tour of the Campus

The tours at JD Academy will take about 45 minutes, which gives you plenty of time to ask questions with our knowledgeable tour guides. They will show you all around campus so you can see the classrooms and meet some of your future instructors.

As part of JD Academy’s campus tour, students will stop by our Academy + Spa facility. This is where our senior students perform hands-on services on real clients- under the direct supervision of our licensed instructors. The salon + spa facility gives students a chance to build up their portfolios and feel comfortable transitioning into their future careers.

We always say that it is a good idea to come prepared. Make sure you ask lots of questions with your tour guide and bring a notebook to take notes. Asking questions will help you know where things are, where to go, and what to expect when you first arrive on campus.

See What Financial Aid You Qualify For

JD Academy is a nationally accredited beauty school, which means students can access various federal and state financial aid options. This includes VA benefit aid, Federal Pell Grants, loan assistance, and more.

If you think that you may be eligible for financial aid, be sure to get in touch with our experienced financial aid advisors for help. They will provide you with resources and run you through the application process.

Students can find specific details of state beauty school grants and scholarship opportunities by visiting their state’s Department of Education website. If you find an option that works for you, we are happy to supply you with the documentation needed to finalize it.

Get Your Beauty School Kit Ready

Beauty school kits are like school supplies. They are the necessary tools and products students will need for their program. The items included in a beauty school kit enable students to train for their professional careers.

You will often receive a list of what you need in your beauty school kit ahead of attending your school. This will be a list of items to bring on your own, such as:

  • Styling Tools
  • Scissors/ Clips
  • Textbooks
  • Cleaning Supplies
  • Aprons
  • Combs/ Brushes
  • School Supplies (notebooks, pens, folders, etc.)

These tools are often offered through beauty schools as part of tuition costs. It’s a good idea to check with your admissions department about this before your first day of classes.

Map Out a Schedule that Works for You

We understand that life gets busy and we want to help you reach your beauty goals. That is why we offer two different schedules. You can attend classes Monday through Friday from 9:15am – 2:45pm or Monday through Thursday from 5pm to 10pm.
