4 Reasons Why You Should Start Beauty School

Are you dreaming about making a change in your life? Maybe you’ve just graduated from high school and you’re trying to decide on the next step in your education. If you have a passion for working with people, you love keeping up with the latest beauty trends, or you just have a knack for looking fabulous and want to help others do the same, beauty school may be a great option for you. Attending cosmetology school in California can provide you with a well-rounded education that stokes your creativity and helps you build a variety of technical skills, so you can master your craft.
Still not sure that it’s the right time to start beauty school? Continue reading for a look at some great reasons why you shouldn’t put your cosmetology education on hold.
Your education will cater to your creative side.
At cosmetology school, your academic experience won’t just be limited to sitting in a lecture hall and quietly taking notes. While there is a classroom component to beauty school, most of your learning will be hands-on. Moreover, it will focus on creative skills like styling hair, applying makeup, and creating beautiful nail art. Cosmetology school is all about developing the skills you need to creatively express your style. Even when you are in the classroom, you will enjoy smaller class sizes and engaged instructors who foster a fun and inclusive learning environment where students can thrive.
Classes begin throughout the year and offer flexible scheduling.
Unlike traditional schools, beauty school allows students to apply year-round with classes typically starting every 5 weeks. That means you don’t need to spend months waiting for a spring or fall semester to roll around to get started. You can apply to cosmetology school as soon as you’re ready for your education to begin.
You also don’t have to put your entire life on hold to attend school. Daytime and nighttime cosmetology class schedules are available, so you can attend classes when it’s most convenient for you and maintain a balance between your education, your work, and your personal life. Here at JD Academy of Salon + Spa, our day schedule begins at 9:15 a.m. and ends at 2:45 p.m. Monday through Friday—it’s designed for students to graduate in approximately 14.5 months. Our night schedule begins at 5:00 p.m. and ends at 10:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Students typically graduate in about 20 months with our nighttime program.
You’ll discover a variety of new skills (and get a chance to practice them).
Cosmetology isn’t just about cutting hair. It includes a wide range of skills, including advanced coloring, chemical treatment, and styling techniques. Cosmetology also includes makeup, nail care, skin care, and eyebrow beautification, so you can become a well-rounded stylist with the ability to perform a broad range of client services. However, your education doesn’t stop at beauty services. You’ll also build a foundation of scientific knowledge and business savvy to support your future career. Here’s a closer look at what you can expect to learn in cosmetology school.
Anatomy, Physiology, and Safety
While styling hair and applying makeup do require an artistic eye, they also necessitate some basic scientific knowledge. For example, understanding anatomy and physiology will help you more effectively contour and highlight your clients’ features. In addition, you’ll need a background in biology and health to ensure a safe working environment to perform client-facing services. Your cosmetology curriculum will include this essential information to help you develop your craft.
Hair, Skin, and Nail Care
When it comes to skills like styling and cutting hair, practice makes perfect. That’s why you’ll have plenty of hands-on experience working with mannequins and real clients* to practice all of your new techniques, including:
- Hair cutting and styling
- Coloring (All over color, highlights, balayage, and more)
- Chemical texture treatments
- Deep conditioning treatments
- Eyebrow waxing
- Manicuring and pedicuring
Business Skills
Cosmetology is a business, which is why beauty school includes a focus on business skills like marketing, salon management, and building client relationships. Whether you aspire to work in an established salon, own your own salon, or become a freelance stylist, you’ll need to know how the industry works to succeed in your goals.
Financial aid is available to those who qualify.
The potential cost of a great education should not hold you back from pursuing your passion in beauty school. Financial aid and scholarships are available to students who qualify.
